Violence against children is a pervasive problem in Uganda, as in many countries in the world. A vast majority of children experience violence on a regular basis from adults they know in their community, schools or at home. During our work on prevention of violence against women, we noted with alarming frequency, the egregious incidences of violence against children. In mid 2004, Raising Voices launched a specific programmatic response in Uganda to prevent violence against children. This response is organised into three programs:
National Dialogue on Violence Against Children
This involves conducting research to find out the nature and the extent of the problem, and subsequently launching a national dialogue informed by the key findings.
Safer Schools
This involves working with selected schools to create examples and experience of safer schools, and developing a written illustrated tool based on this experience that will help other schools to replicate this model.
Communication materials
These communication materials are designed to create dialogue
and discussion about violence against children.
