Together with Gloria! was developed as a collaboration between Raising Voices, Peripheral Vision International (PVI), Uganda Network on Law Ethics and HIV/AIDS (UGANET) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine—bringing together expertise in violence prevention, media, research and practice-based learning from SASA! Together communities.
The drama follows Gloria, the main protagonist, as she starts a new talk show on her local radio station to discuss issues connected to violence against women and healthy relationships. Over 33 episodes, Gloria’s activism grows alongside the popularity of her talk show, where she interviews dynamic community guests–including SASA! Together activists, health care workers, religious leaders, and more– and engages with callers on air. Together with Gloria! also dramatizes Gloria’s personal relationships with her family, her boyfriend Jack, and colleagues from the radio station. Throughout, the content mirrors SASA! Together ideas from Start to Action phases, unpacking different types of power and encouraging reflections on how to foster healthy and peaceful intimate relationships.
Radio offers a promising opportunity to expand SASA! Together’s reach—particularly in sparsely populated rural areas or other contexts where it may be difficult for people to gather together (e.g., during public health emergencies, humanitarian crises, times of conflict, etc.). The drama also aims to deepen engagement and create a new channel for community members to connect to SASA! Together ideas. Together with Gloria! aspires to harness the power and potential of ‘edutainment’ – using entertaining characters and stories to prompt empathy and critical thinking among listeners and ultimately to catalyze action to prevent violence against women.
Together with Gloria! is a supplemental part of SASA! Together; it is not intended as a stand-alone program. It is designed to be broadcast alongside other Local Activism activities, and SASA! Together community activists support engagement with the radio drama, through facilitating Radio Discussion Groups to deepen critical reflection and help listeners relate the events of the drama to their own lives. Download the Together with Gloria! Guide for further details, including guidance for adapting the drama to different contexts, training materials, and more.
